Abdulrazak Gurnah's novel "Afterlives" begins, Hamza, a young Tanzanian man, is preparing to leave his village to pursue an education. However, his plans are disrupted when he is forced to join the German army during World War I. After the war, Hamza returns to his village, but his experiences have left him disillusioned and haunted by memories of violence.
